JULY 2010: the change

Nabi Syuaib berkata: “Wahai kaumku!

(Hud, 11:88)

English: He said: O my people! have you considered if I have a clear proof from my Lord and He has given me a goodly sustenance from Himself, and I do not desire that in opposition to you I should betake myself to that which I forbid you: I desire nothing but reform so far as I am able, and with none but Allah is the direction of my affair to a right issue; on Him do I rely and to Him do I turn

I will start with a reality:

have you seen someone (or even yourself) going to some sort of motivational camp or some other things alike, only to come home the same person (read: no change at all). the problems might lie with the ones organizing them, or the mediocre speakers or the program itself is just so-so. however, there are programs held by the experts in motivating people, and had seen millions and millions of people change. but among the throng of people, undeniably, there are people that benefit almost nothing from these. what’s the real problem then?

the answer is actually obvious: the person himself. possibly there is not the slightest of intention to change at all. the reason they go is probably their parents/boss force them to, or to fulfill a friend’s invitation and such. so, you can do weeks of programs, or bring the best of motivators, but if there is no intention to change, it will never happen, or at least it will not sustain. (note: intention=niat, can check the 1st hadith of matan arbai’n by Imam Nawawi)

to change is not something easy, especially to the better. but it is never too late to try. and when we talk about change, there’s always Allah’s will and human’s effort. it is a bit complicated, but i don’t want to go deeper into it, but i want you to really understand this words by brother Nouman Ali Khan in his tafseer of surah atTakweer, 81:28-29:

“you start taking the 1st step, Allah will make the next 1000 steps easy for you. you think you gonna do it on your own you’re gonna fail, you think Allah will make everything for you, you’re gonna fail. you have to make the 1st step, and then you put your trust in Allah S.W.T.”

look again at the surah Hud above:

it’s actually very much related, YOU have to have the solid intention, try your best, and then pray to Allah to help you.  make the first step, and InsyaAllah Allah will guide you. just don’t give up, and really feel the urge to change for the better. and i’m pretty sure you know this ayah very well:

(alAnfal, 8:53)

last but not least, a familiar hadith to go with:

“o Allah, help us become better muslims, and guide us along the way;
o family, brothers and sisters, do pray for us, for your prayers are more precious than a shoulder that we can lean on;
o friends, far and near, we need your support, advise us, and remind us, because we can naturally forget, and our hearts are ever-changing.”

a reminder for  myself also

p/s: regarding the detail on how to change is not my specialty. there are lots of books for this out there. find them, maybe this is your 1st step, insyaAllah Allah will help you afterward. also check this out: Islahunnafs (memperbaiki diri). but to me, there is no better changing force other than tarbiyyah. what’s tarbiyyah really means? hope this helps: Erti tarbiyyah. also this one: Sampai Bila Tarbiyyah?

wallahua’lam
